Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's death the family of Ford, they were managed by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford started to become interested in acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford's debut on TV was a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
